BUILDING COMMUNITY
Acts 2:1–47
The mission Jesus gave His disciples requires the power of the Holy Spirit.
PENTECOST & THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts 2:1–4
On the day of Pentecost, the believers were together when the Holy Spirit came upon them.
They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Spirit gave them ability.
“Tongues” — Greek: Glōssa
The tongue
A language
A language not naturally acquired
Peter explained that what they were seeing had been promised by God through the prophet Joel:
“I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.”
— Acts 2:17
And:
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
— Acts 2:21
THE GOSPEL RESPONSE
Peter proclaimed Jesus: His death, resurrection, and exaltation.
Acts 2:37–38
When the people heard Peter’s message, they asked:
“Brothers, what should we do?”
Peter responded:
Repent. Believe. Be baptized. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
About 3,000 people believed, were baptized, and were added to the church that day.
THE PROGRESSION
Repented — Turned from the direction that wasn’t helping them grow in Christ.
Believed
Received Jesus as Lord
Were baptized
Were filled with the Holy Spirit
“Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
— Acts 2:38
THE BELIEVERS FORM A COMMUNITY
Acts 2:42–47
The early believers devoted themselves to:
The apostles’ teaching
Fellowship
Sharing meals
Prayer
Worship
Generosity
Caring for those in need
They lived with joy, generosity, awe, and unity, and the Lord continued adding people to their fellowship.
WHAT'S YOUR NEXT STEP?
Wherever you are in your walk with God, take the next step.
□ Say YES to Jesus for the first time
□ Be baptized — publicly declare that Jesus is Lord
□ Be filled with the Holy Spirit
□ Receive your prayer language
PRAY & SEEK
1 Corinthians 14:2
Speaking in tongues is speaking to God by the power of the Spirit.
Romans 8:26
The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when we don't know how to pray.
Jude 1:20
“Build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 11:13
“How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
TAKE THE NEXT STEP
What is God asking you to do?
Jesus isn't calling us to hold back. He's calling us to surrender.
Receiving Jesus as Lord means giving Him every part of our lives.
What we see.
What we hear.
What we say.
How we live.
“I WILL NEVER WALK ALONE!”
BUILDING COMMUNITY
We aren't meant to walk with Jesus alone.
Be the kind of friend to others that you would want for yourself.
“A man who has friends must himself be friendly.”
— Proverbs 18:24
Who are your TOP 10?
Who is someone you can invite, encourage, or help take their next step toward Jesus?
NEXT STEPS
Baptism is coming up!
If you haven't been water baptized, why not?
Baptism is a public declaration that:
Jesus is my Lord.
My old life is behind me.
I'm ALL IN with Jesus.
