Growth Starts Small

“The hands of Zerubbabel Have laid the foundation of this temple; His hands shall also finish it. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. 10 For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel...” Zechariah 4:9-10 NKJV

It was no small thing for Zerubbabel to lay the foundation of the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem; yet for some it was despised because it seemed insignificant. What seemed like a weak and poor beginning of the rebuilding of the temple was contemptible to the enemies of Judah, and inferior in the eyes the Jews who had seen the former temple.

Everything that has the potential to grow starts out small no matter what it is. A massive oak tree does not start out massive; it starts out as a small acorn and grows over time. To despise something when it is small is a failure to recognize it’s potential. When it seems we are in a small place we must rejoice and recognize the opportunity and potential for growth. The plumb line is a measurement or standard for growth and expansion and determines where the growth is to take place. We will not despise the day of small things when we see and understand God’s purpose and potential in it. “Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly.” Job 8:7 NKJV

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, let us not despise the day of small things but rather rejoice when what we are doing and the place we are at in life seems insignificant. Help us to recognize the potential for growth and increase in what seems small.

God Bless,

Pastor Matt
