The Greatest Commandment

“"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. 38 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."” Matthew 22:36-40 ESV

Jesus answered the question asked Him by one of the Pharisees who was a lawyer, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?” It appears that his question was sincere because Jesus had just silenced the Sadducee's on the issue of the resurrection which impressed the Pharisees. Jesus addressed this important question regarding the law, since their mindset was rule based and not relational. The greatest of all commandments is the commandment to love which is relational. Loving God and others should be the first and foremost objective of our lives.

It's when we love God that we are capable of truly loving others; our love for God will be demonstrated in our love for people. Our focus should be walking in the love of God. The law is fulfilled in love. “Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

TODAY’S PRAYER

Thank you Lord that love is the fulfillment of the law. May we live by the commandment to love as our focus in life out of relationship and not just a law.

God bless,
