The Greatest Among You

“The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:11-12 ESV

True greatness is revealed in our capacity to serve. Greatness is not determined by how many serve us, but in how well we serve others. Jesus ascertains that greatness is expressed through serving and points out that humility not self-exaltation leads to greatness. Pride exalts self and is self-focused, while humility focuses on the needs of others.

Humility is required to serve because it esteems other people’s needs as important. A person’s greatness is determined by their humility and how well they serve rather than their position, prestige or popularity. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 ESV. Greatness is discovered among those who serve.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Thank you Jesus for helping us discover true greatness through serving others. We pray that you increase our capacity to serve as we humble ourselves before you.

God bless,
