God is Our Refuge

“The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the Lord is a refuge to His people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.” Joel 3:16 ESV

The Lord is our defender and protector; the scripture refers to Him as a refuge to His people. He is genuinely concerned about our safety and well-being. A refuge is defined as a safe place; it is a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, trouble or the storms of this life. A refuge is a protective shelter, a place where we can receive help in time of need. A refuge is a safe place for people, a place free from traps and a place of protection from the enemy. We all need a refuge in life which the Lord has become to us.

Along with refuge the Word speaks of the Lord being a stronghold. A stronghold is a place that has been fortified so as to protect against attack, it’s a place of security or survival. The believer must recognize and identify God as their refuge and strength as well as a stronghold to His people. “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalms 46:1 NLT.

The final word according to Ephesians 6:10 reveals that we are to be strong in the Lord, not in our own strength. We cannot depend on our own strength, so God gives us His. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Ephesians 6:10 ESV.
