A New Heart

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” Ezekiel 36:26-27 ESV

The condition of man’s heart was so deteriorated that it required more than just heart surgery, it required a heart transplant. The scripture states emphatically God’s promise of giving His people a new heart and a new spirit. Earlier in the book of Ezekiel we see God’s promise to give them one heart. “…I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them..." Ezekiel 11:19 ESV. ‘One heart’ speaks of unity which is a key to peace and harmony in our relationship with God and man. It seems obvious that for God’s people to have one heart it is necessary for them to have a new heart. The new heart God gives us has the capacity to be one and unite to serve a greater purpose - the purpose of God. Unity under God’s authority and influence is the key for the body of Christ to impact the world.

The new heart is one capable of possessing God’s Spirit, which is a key to walking in obedience to Him. “Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:17 ESV.
