You Heard, You Came

“They flung me alive into the pit and cast stones on me; 54 water closed over my head; I said, 'I am lost.' 55 "I called on your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit; 56 you heard my plea, 'Do not close your ear to my cry for help!' 57 You came near when I called on you; you said, 'Do not fear!'” Lamentations 3:53-57 ESV

Did you ever find yourself in a pit of hopeless despair? Jeremiah the Prophet who is the author of Lamentations did. He was flung alive in a pit and had stones thrown upon him. In the third chapter Jeremiah describes the persecution he endured. He tells his horrific story as a testimony of God’s response to come to his rescue. Being thrown into a pit was part of the persecution he endured which surely should have been his demise, yet from the depths of the pit he called on the name of the Lord. The Lord heard his plea for help and came to his rescue.

The phrase, “You heard and you came,” reveals the Lord’s response when Jeremiah called on the Lord. No matter the depth of the pit you have fallen into, call on the Lord; not only will He hear but He will respond and come to your rescue. When God says, “do not fear,” there is nothing to fear and no reason to fear or be afraid.
