Power of the Tongue

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs 18:21 ESV

An important element in our Christian walk is the proper use of our tongue. Many believers have not recognized the effect and outcome of the words we speak and have underestimated the power and potential of the tongue. Consider the significance of this passage, and ask yourself, “Am I speaking life or am I speaking death over my present situation? Am I speaking life or death over people? Am I speaking life or death over myself?” I love how verse 21 is stated in GOD’S WORD Translation. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love to talk will have to eat their own words.”

If death and life are in the power of the tongue, it must be understood that the wise use of the tongue is critical for the believer to succeed in this life. The tongue is often out of control and causes much hurt, negativity, heartache and discouragement; even physical and emotional damage. It is the cause of much pain and suffering in the Earth. Our tongue out of control is destructive not only in our life but also in the lives of others.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Thank you Lord for giving us a greater understanding of the power of the words we speak. Convict us when we speak carelessly or contrary to your Word. Help us to speak words of life that will edify others rather than words of death that tear them down. “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” Proverbs 13:3 ESV.

God bless,

Pastor Matt
