The Way You Should Go

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” Psalm32:8ESV

Psalm 32 addresses confession and forgiveness of sin, yet what has always stood out to me is the promise in verse eight. He will instruct us and teach us in the way we should go, counsel us and keep an eye on us. We have all come to places in our life where we lack direction and don’t know the way we should go. The implication is that His instruction and teaching and counsel is ongoing.

There is a way we should go but how often do we fail to go that way because we choose another option? How often do we access advice from the Lord? This is one offer we should not refuse yet we often gravitate towards man’s wisdom rather than God’s. Of course there is a place for man’s wisdom in many practical matters but consider for a moment instruction and advice from the creator Himself.

Our heart cry should be, “instruct us and teach us in the way we should go,” but understand it is in reference to the way we should live. The Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) states, “The Lord says, “I will teach you and guide you in the way you should live. I will watch over you and be your guide.” Psalm 32:8 ERV. Under the New Covenant we see this promise restated by Jesus Christ in relation to the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things…” John 14:26 ESV. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you...” John 16:13 ESV.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for your promise revealed in your Word to instruct and teach us in the way we should go. You have not left us to figure things out on our own. Thank you for the role of the Holy Spirit and His leadership in our lives.

God bless,

Pastor Matt
