Whole Heart

“I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; 2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.” Psalms 138:1-2

In reference to the heart there are two significant elements we must consider for the use of the word ‘whole’ in Psalm 138:1. They are health and complete devotion. A whole heart speaks of a heart that’s united not divided, a heart that is sound and healthy. Whole or wholeness is defined as sound health; not diseased or injured, not broken, damaged or defective. To be whole means intact, complete; containing all the elements or parts, to be entire or undivided. A well-known fact we see in scripture is that God heals broken hearts which we all have suffered from. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 ESV.

We are to give thanks to the Lord with our whole heart; giving thanks is not something we can be halfhearted about. For God to accomplish in us what He wants to do requires our all; we have to all in, we can’t hold back.

Giving thanks in this passage is in reference to God’s steadfast love and faithfulness that is manifest because He exalted His Name and His Word above all things. God’s love will prevail in every situation because His love is steadfast. His Name and His Word can be trusted because everything is subject to Him. It is when we understand this we bow our knee in humble submission and surrender. “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11 ESV.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, you are the healer of the brokenhearted and the one who makes my heart whole. With my whole heart I give thanks to you and bow my knee to your name and confess you, Jesus Christ as my Lord.

God bless,
